Charity Trek to Mount Kilimanjaro
Employees at a fostering agency in the Midlands are taking on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for a new charity called The Rees Foundation. Staff at Foster Care Associates are hoping to raise in excess of £50,000. The charity has been set up to provide support for anyone of any age who has been in residential or foster care.
The trek to Mount Kilimanjaro in February will take 11 days and will see the workers trekking through both very hot and cold climates as they approach the summit.
Duchess of Cambridge Visits Centre in Islington
The Duchess of Cambridge recently visited The Fostering Network’s centre in Islington. The Duchess met with social workers and foster carers and discussed a new scheme which will help to provide support through education specialists and foster carers to children in care, both at home and at school.
Kate then attended a tea party where she met with foster carers and children and chatted about Prince George.
Liverpool needs more Foster Carers
A public event is being held by the Council in Liverpool’s Town Hall to help recruit foster families in the City. There has been an increase in looked-after children over the past 5 years and an additional 50 foster homes are needed to meet the demand. This demand has increased all over Britain following the Baby P case in 2007. The cabinet member for Children’s Services, Councillor Jane Corbett, said that they are doing all they can to recruit and support carers.
The event will be opened by Lord Mayor Councillor Erica Kemp.
Leaflet launched by Bridgwater student
A student from Somerset has produced a leaflet to help foster carers understand LGBT. Emma Willoughby,18, created the leaflet with the help of the charity Somerset Fostering Team and Fixers. The leaflet gives the definitions of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender terms and offers tips to help foster carers support a young person who is LGBT.
Emma is hoping that the leaflet will be distributed across the County and a spokesperson from the Council said that they are very happy to give her their backing towards this.
