Bets on Alice

Monday’s Fostering Blog

Oh my goodness what a shock to the system getting up this morning was. We only had a week off but my goodness I got used to the lazy starts each day while we were on holiday. Yesterday the clocks went back which gave us an extra hour. This morning though, for some reason I feel like I’ve got jet-lag and could do with an extra hour in bed. No time for that though – it’s straight up and dressed and breakfast and out to school.

On days like this you can pretty much guarantee that one of the children will wake up like a bear with a sore head, I would have put bets on that it would have been Alice, she seems to always pick up when we are stressed or in a rush, and her behaviour will just add to the situation increasing stress levels and making it even harder to get out of the door on time. But if I had placed a bet today – I would have been wrong. Today, Lauren was not happy! She woke up – crawled out of bed (obviously from the wrong side!) and came downstairs rubbing her eyes, hair all over the place not looking her best – Charlie has a term for this – “looking like the Wreck of the Hesperus”.

Lauren announced that she didn’t want to go to school today. She wasn’t ill, she said she just couldn’t face it. I think it was more of a case of not wanting to face the 30 minute walk to school. I left her to get her breakfast, and held back in offering her a lift (I wondered if that was what she was really after), I thought I would wait to see how the morning pans out first. If I offer a lift too quickly she will grab the chance and then expect it each morning. Fortunately after a bowl of cereal and a cup of tea, she was feeling much more positive and without any further first got herself changed and ready for school. By the time her friend called for her at 8 o’clock, she was smiling and ready for the day.

If only it were always that easy! When Alice starts the day like that, the day is usually a complete write off Fortunately today she got out of the right side of bed and we had a good start to her day and hopefully the rest of the week too!!
