Monday’s Fostering Blog
Today is the start of two weeks that Charlie will be completing Jury Service at the local Crown Court. He was called up earlier in the summer, but opted to defer it as he had just started a new job and wanted to be around for the girls as they settled into their new schools after our house move. We did not expect him to be called up so soon after deferring, so now he has no choice but to go as you can only defer once.
A few days ago he received a letter from the Crown Court asking him if he can serve on a five week trial. No Way!! I took the paperwork from him and quickly got to work on all the reasons why he could not possibly attend for five weeks. I look through his work diary and add all the commitments he has between now and Christmas. Never mind the fact that this is one of the busiest times of the year for his job, he shares the care of a foster child with complex care needs… I’m just hoping they take that all into account.
He woke up with the beginnings of a migraine. This was definitely not the start he was hoping for. But without a doctors note, he would still have to attend or risk a fine. So he went off with his medication in hand. He was hoping for an easy two weeks – where he could sit in the waiting room and read a paper and catch up with some work. Unfortunately it did not quite go according to plan. On the first day he was called to serve on the jury of a two week trial. Not an easy week for Charlie after all.
It wouldn’t be an easy week for the family either. It’s a busy time of year for Charlie in his work. Although he had time off work to serve on the jury, he still had commitments every evening. This means he will be out all day and all evening for two weeks and as he works weekends he will have no day off either. I have a feeling it will be a long two weeks!
