Did you Know - East Riding of Yorkshire?

A third of place names in East and North Ridings are of Scandinavian origin in the Domesday book, following the invasion of the Danes. They established the Ridings system. The word comes from the Danish work ‘Thridding’, meaning a third.

In 1931, the UK’s biggest recorded earthquake occurred at Dogger Bank, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale.

The name of the market town of Beverely in East Yorkshire comes from the Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘Beaver Clearing’. The beavers that lived on the River Hull are no longer there, however, the town crest has a beaver on it.

Hull Fair is the biggest traveling fair in Europe, the Humber Bridge was the longest single-span suspension bridge in the world. Hedon hosted the East Riding Yorkshire Day event in 2010, there are just under 150,000 households in the East Riding and the population is about 333,000.
